Barboides gracilis.

The Dwarf Ember Barb (Barboides gracilis) is one of the smallest fish species in the aquarium hobby. These tiny fish are esteemed for their diminutive size, making them a beautiful addition to small-scale aquariums. However, their scarcity in the hobby can be attributed to the challenges encountered in breeding, resulting in limited availability. Here are some key points about Dwarf Ember Barbs:

  • Size: Dwarf Ember Barbs grow to a maximum size of approximately 1.8 cm.
  • Behavior: They exhibit a non-aggressive demeanor and generally do not initiate conflicts within a community aquarium. However, their small size makes them susceptible to potential aggression from larger species.
  • Tankmates: Compatible companions include Boraras, Pygmy Corydoras, Otocinclus Catfish, Clown Killifish, Panda Garras, Harlequin Rasboras, Guppies, and Endlers. Avoid housing them with larger or more aggressive species.
  • Group Living: Thriving in the company of their own kind, maintaining a group of at least six individuals promotes their well-being.
  • Water Conditions: Clean water conditions are essential. They prefer calm or gentle water movement and are intolerant of high ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates.
  • Natural Habitat: Dwarf Ember Barbs hail from small coastal rivers and streams in Africa, including regions in Benin, southern Nigeria, Cameroon, and Equatorial Guinea. These waters are characterized by tannins, contributing to their rich and acidic nature.
