The most distinguishing feature is the black keyhole marking on their upper flank, which resembles a spot or short stripe. They also have a black line running across their head through the eye.

- Habitat: Keyhole cichlids inhabit slow-moving waters with dense vegetation. They’re primarily found in river basins, tributaries, or coastal creeks in South America.
- Lifespan: They can live up to 10 years in ideal tank conditions.
- Scientific Name: Their name comes from the keyhole marking on their bodies, and the genus name Cleithracara means “lock acara” in Greek and Guaraní
- Tank Setup: Provide slow-moving water, dense vegetation, and hiding spots for these timid fish.
- Compatibility: They get along well with similar-sized peaceful fish.
