Overview
Red Top Hongi's are an undescribed species of Mbuna. Sometimes it is also simply known as Hongi Cichlid, as a reference to where it is found in nature. They are also sometimes labeled as Red Top Kimpuna. Their bodies are bluish purple in color and the top half of their head and back is a vibrant blood orange hue. They have thick black banding and orange finnage. Males are larger and more brightly colored; females and juveniles may be somewhat brown toned.
The tank should have plenty of rockwork for them to hide in. They can be territorial and males will be aggressive towards their own species, so if housed in a group they will do best with one male and multiple females. They are mouth-brooders and will spawn in captivity. They can live with other semi-aggressive cichlid species.
While they will eat meaty preparations meant for their tankmates, they are herbivores and should be given plenty of vegetable matter.
