Overview

The Blue Hippo Tang is known by many other common names; simply the Blue Tang, Regal Tang, Pacific Blue Tang, Royal Blue Tang, Hippo Tang, Palette Surgeonfish and other more obscure names. It is an extremely popular marine fish but is not suitable for beginner aquarists. It possesses a bright blue body with thick black markings and an equally vibrant yellow tail and is easily distinguishable from other tang species.

It needs a large tank with plenty of swimming space and rock work for it to hide in. It can be timid when young or newly introduced to the tank and may wedge itself in the rocks. It is usually peaceful towards other fish but it will become aggressive towards members of it's own species, though multiple Blue Tang's can be kept in a large enough aquarium if introduced at the same time. It will primarily graze on marine algae and other herbivorous food but will also munch on meaty foods meant for it's tankmates. It should be offered marine seaweed multiple times a week.
